FOUR Guides from York have worked hard for at least a year to earn one of the country's top youth awards.

The members of the 12th York Guide Company, which meets at Holgate Methodist Church, attended a camp fire party to receive the prestigious Baden Powell Challenge Award, named after the founder of the Scout Movement.

To earn the accolade Sophie Foster, 15, Natalie Whaite, 15, Rachel Waite and Danielle Calpin, both 14, had to complete ten challenges and then attend a Baden Powell Challenge Weekend at the Earth Centre, near Doncaster.

The challenges were divided into five sections: healthy lifestyle; global awareness; discovery; skills and relationships; and celebrating diversity.

Jackie Rodaway, the leader of 12th York, who presented badges and certificates to the four teenagers, said: "Earning this award is quite an achievement.

"It is the highest award that a Guide can get in that age group.

"They have all worked really hard for it, and we are very proud of them."
