THE team that achieved one of the most remarkable victories in York local league football are staging a reunion on Sunday.

The side in question, a Fulford United Reserves team from around the 1950s, won a match despite fielding only five players for the entire game.

The date or year of the match is not known, but it is believed Fulford were bottom of the York League division 2B at the time. They turned up at Escrick Park with only five men, with skipper Frank Chelin deciding to start the match in the belief the rest of the team would turn up on the next bus.

According to the Evening Press cutting of the time, Frank played at full-back, with 'Tiny' Robertson in goal, Doug Gilleard as half-back and Ken Hunt and S MacGowan as forwards.

The cutting read: "Not only did no more players turn up but the 'Fulford Five' held Escrick's team to such effectiveness that they led 1-0 at half-time, from a goal by MacGowan.

"Two more by Chelin after the interval enabled them to run out 3-1 winners."

Chelin said at the time: "Escrick played right into our hands by persisting in solo dribbles instead of swinging the ball about."

He added today: "When I told a few of the lads at the club, some of the younger ones don't believe it but a lot remember it."

Any survivors of the squad are asked to meet at 1pm on Sunday at Fulfordgate Club on Heslington Lane, Fulford.
