PAINTING the town red was given a whole new meaning when Tadcaster gave its support to the British Heart Foundation.

The town, which is home to the charity's regional office, donned scarlet, cherry, vermilion and ruby yesterday to help raise funds as part of Heart Week 2003.

Supporters gathered in Kirkgate to meet the British Heart Foundation (BHF) mascot Mr Hearty, who was joined by firefighters from Tadcaster and their red engine.

Four members of staff from Barry Davies Butchers in Bridge Street had their hair dyed red and the town's chamber of trade made a collection of almost £100.

Tony Doveston, BHF regional director for north England, said: "The weather was beautiful and the town looks splendid. We have been based in Tadcaster for a number of years and it is good to see everyone getting behind us.

"The traders have really put a great deal of effort in, decorating their windows with red and hearts, and raising money all week.

"I would like to thank the chamber of trade for their support this week during which we hope to raise the profile of children with congenital heart defects."
