THE boss of the York design company behind the re-branding of York City has been dismissed, the Evening Press can reveal.

Nick Townend was managing director of Northcross Ideas, based at York Science Park.

A former director of York City Football Club, Mr Townend, 42, who lives near Pocklington, led the firm in giving the football club's image an overhaul, including designing a new club crest.

A letter was sent to all the current clients of the Northcross Group's York office informing them of Mr Townend's departure.

The letter from Graham Russell, chairman of the Northcross Group, said: "It is with regret that I have to inform you that Nick Townend has been dismissed from his duties as managing director of our York office. Unfortunately, for legal reasons, I cannot discuss this serious matter further."

The York office will now be led by Gary Scarborough and backed up by the Northcross Group's Edinburgh office.

The company develops brands and businesses on an international scale with major clients, including Nestl, Martell, Lego, Direct Line and Absolut.

Northcross was one of York City's biggest unsecured creditors and was owed £28,000 by the club. In March Mr Townend told the Evening Press he thought the football club had to mend bridges with the business community.
