GREEN-FINGERED enthusiasts have the chance for a real behind-the-scenes glimpse into the world of gardening when they visit an historic North Yorkshire house this month.

Members of Castle Howard's gardening club will be looking into every nook and cranny at the stately home as part of June's "low maintenance gardening" events. As an added bonus, plant centre manager John Foxton will be inviting people into his own backyard, carefully tended for almost 25 years.

The venue for the visit is a typical cottage garden, with vegetables and ornamental plants. John said: "When I tell the group that we are popping to my back garden the enthusiasm I receive is overwhelming.

"I think they enjoy the personal touch that I like to bring to the gardening talks."

Membership is open to every level of gardener and costs £12 a year.
