Two trapped geese and two goslings were rescued from the River Foss in York by firefighters.
They received a call saying the birds were trapped in the lock at Tower Street at 5.28pm on Saturday.
A North Yorkshire Fire & Rescue service spokeswoman said they waited until the birds were tired before using ladders to rescue them.
