Nestl Rowntree Athletics Club and York Acorn Running Club are jointly promoting a new road race meeting in York next month.

The York Millenium Bridge Races will take place on the roads on either side of the river Ouse and around Rowntree Park on Tuesday, August 12.

There will be a 2.5k race aimed at juniors and a 5k race for senior runners.

Race director Andy Normandale said: "We tried out the course last year as a challenge between our clubs and Kingston upon Hull Athletics Club.

"The course proved very popular and

we have made changes to improve it further.

"This year the race will be open to all. Sponsorship from Nestl Rowntree has enabled us to give Nestl goods to all finishers as well as prizes to the winners.

"Support has also been given by Sweatshop."

Normandale is particularly keen to get a good field in the 2.5k race as there are not too many competitive races for juniors in the area.

The minimum age is 11 on race day and prizes will be awarded in the categories for Under-13, U15 and U17 boys and girls.

Entry in advance is recommended, though entry on the day is allowed so long as the entry limit has not been reached. The last date for pre-entries is August 8.

Entry forms are available from running shops in York and on-line from the websites www.ukresults.net and www.entryforms.org.uk
