EXPERIENCED back-rower Dave Smith is set to become the latest player to join York City Knights.
It is hoped he will sign on the dotted line tonight, and if so, the 30-year-old would return to Huntington Stadium after a six-year gap, having played for York Wasps between 1995 and 1997.
Should he join, he would be a natural replacement for second-row Scott Fletcher, who was allowed to leave the club this week because of work commitments and difficulties in travelling from Hull.
Smith, who left Wasps to join Keighley Cougars, has been with Division One club Batley Bulldogs this year, but work commitments have halted his progress in the first team, for whom he has played only six times in the past two seasons.
Smith played for Wasps 46 times in total, scoring 16 tries. He made eight appearances, including as a substitute, in 1994-95, scoring two tries; 14 appearances in 1995-96, scoring four tries; 18 in 1996, scoring six tries; and six in 1997, scoring four tries before injury ruled him out for the rest of that term.
