YOUNGSTERS turned out in numbers at a junior golf clinic organised by Easingwold GC, writes Peter Martini.
Former club captain Keith Knapton, now in charge of the junior section at the club, organised the session for youngsters who would otherwise have few chances to play the game.
He said: "It was done to promote the game in the area and we had a terrific response, with 36 kids between the ages of five and 14 turning up.
"Some had had a go at golf before and some hadn't, and they thought it was wonderful. It seems like they're keen to come again."
Knapton, who has been on an English Golf Foundation course on junior development, said there were plans in place to hold coaching days in local primary schools after the summer holidays, while more clinics are set to be held before then, though no dates have been confirmed.
"Hopefully this will have a long-term effect to get kids interested in golf and get into Easingwold GC or any of the York Union of Golf Clubs," he added.
CAPTAINCY gave way in the Kilnwick Percy GC July medal.
Both Peter Williamson (in division one) and club captain Steve Johnson (in div two) carded nett 67 scores, but it was ten-handicapper Williamson who prevailed on count-back by one shot. Mark Gatenby was the division one runner-up, also on count-back from Toby Gowthorpe, who did post the event's lowest gross score of 76.
There was an exciting finish to the ladies' medal, count-back also separating the top three and leaving the captain in second place. The winner was Iona Buckle, ahead of lady captain Linda Johnson with Vivien Howson third.
THERE was a round to remember for Judy McHenry.
She scored a magnificent 48 points - the equivalent of 12-under-par - to win Fulford GC lady captain Angela Quickfall's Captain's Day prize. She was six points ahead of Linda Edmondson, runner-up on count-back from Kay Bradley.
Edmondson was soon among the winners when her six-under-par 68 netted the club's July extra medal, three strokes clear of Linda Rigby.
FIRST York are having a real busman's holiday at Forest Park GC tomorrow.
The transport company are holding the Day Rover Classic - 18 holes of strokeplay on the Stockton-on-Forest course - sponsored for the first time by William H Brown of Haxby.
Prizes will be presented to the top three, for the longest drive and nearest the pin, and also, cuttingly, for the worst round of the day.
HOSTS with the most was the preserve of Pike Hills GC when it staged the Yorkshire Herald mixed foursome final. The club won three of the eight prizes, led by tournament winners Mr R and Mrs W Newbegin, whose 68 was half a point ahead of their nearest rivals.
ONE of the most emphatic triumphs was posted by Fulford GC's Trish Mitchell, who won all but one hole of her Yorkshire Scratch League home match against Driffield finishing nine up with eight to play. However, Driffield won the tie 5-2 overall.
JUNIOR member Nick Marchant won the Forest of Galtres GC July medal with a fine nett 64 from his handicap of 13. Divisional winners, all on nett 65, were: Jamie Gavin (div 1); Ray Norton (div 2); and Paul O'Neill (div 3).
