Like their countrymen Super Furry Animals, cult Welsh band Gorky's Zygotic Mynci have been pursuing a pop mission as eccentric as their name for the best part of a decade.

Their last offering, 2000's The Blue Trees, saw them hit a winning vein of charming acoustic folk pop. Sadly, Sleep/Holiday is as meandering a record as its indecisive title suggests. Sleepy is the word for mainman Euros Childs' mournful vocals, and for the musical mood, as tracks unfold in slow motion, led by acoustic guitar, electric piano and melancholic violin. Single Mow The Lawn is the exception, a daft upbeat singalong which sounds like a jokey collaboration between mid-1970s Paul McCartney and psychedelic casualty Syd Barrett. Sleep/Holiday boasts moments of melodic, sad beauty, but for the most part, Gorky's are wrapped up in their own little world, and not welcoming visitors.
