SO airfield historian Guy Jefferson thinks it a good idea to reduce the noise to residents of a suggested airport at Elvington by constraining flights to the north of the runway with presumably turning approaches over (say) Dunnington, Fulford, Heslington, Osbaldwick and the proposed new university campus.

This is almost as bad as an early planning brief that suggested because few people lived to the west of the runway the peace and quiet of this area could be preserved by limiting approaches to the east where lots of people live.

Environmentally, airports are bad news because the noise footprint covers a wide area. However as the runway exists it would be easy on a nice summer day to have a large fully-laden aircraft do some take offs along any proposed air corridors so the residents could experience the noise levels in their gardens first hand. My guess is this would end the discussion.
