THE phenomenon that is Mis-Teeq thrilled a packed York Barbican last night with their unique and winning blend of British R&B, garage and pop.

Bravely overcoming technical problems early on in their set, Alesha, Sabrina and Su-Elise provided a powerhouse of a show, demonstrating why they have received a stack of prestigious awards during the past two years.

It was difficult to believe this was Mis-Teeq's first UK tour. The three girls established an immediate, and genuine, rapport with the crowd, while their band was tight and slick.

It was refreshing to see such raw energy - and talent - in a world which is becoming increasingly dominated by image and packaging. They write most of their own songs, too.

And these songs sound great. Highlights last night were the huge hit Scandalous, unleashed as a storming encore, One Night Stand, B With You and Roll On.

The girls also paid tribute to the bands that influenced them in their formative days, notably TLC, with a medley of hits from yesteryear.

"Dance your cares away," Mis-Teeq exhorted at the beginning of the concert - and the enthusiastic Barbican audience did just that. Mis-Teeq might comprise three modern and sassy lassies, but they certainly know how to provide a night of old-fashioned entertainment. They were the genuine article. Support was provided by the charming Jamelia, who looks to have a tremendous future ahead of her, and Wayne Williams, once of Another Level, who proved to be a more acquired taste. Whilst Jamelia's songs, especially the mellow Thank You and her hit, Superstar, were memorable, Williams' performance relied more on physical dexterity than musical talent.
