PREPARATIONS have begun for Venturefest, a massive international fair in York for the world's science and technology "venturers".

The region's first science and technology exhibition and conference for entrepreneurs and business start-ups is being hosted by The York Professional Initiative (YPI) and leading regional development agencies in the brand new Ebor Stand at York Racecourse on February 5 next year. The free one-day event is being organised by the YPI with main sponsors Yorkshire Forward, Business Link York and North Yorkshire and Science City York The event will comprise an exhibition running alongside a series of seminars, giving entrepreneurs of all ages and business start-ups access to the resources, information and advice they need to set up and grow.

It will allow them to network, display their genius and seek both information and private equity finance.

The Venturefest concept was first launched in 1999 at Oxford where it has since become a successful two-day event, but until now there has been no northern equivalent, one that would create a balanced UK-wide coverage for the show.

John Yeomans, YPI director, said: ""A visit from YPI representatives to Venturefest Oxford in June last year resulted in Oxford's full backing to run a similar event in York.

"It is an exciting opportunity for existing and budding entrepreneurs of all ages, as well as growing science, technology and knowledge-based businesses. Venturefest York will give these people access to the contacts, information, business support, professional services and funding advice they need to set up, develop and grow.

"We've had a tremendous response and a great deal of support from the regional businesses community already and we're confident Venturefest York will be a resounding success."

He said that it was natural for the YPI, which had the same ethos as Venturefest, to take the helm in York. "The technology sector is expanding rapidly and forecasts predict that this growth will continue.

"It's vital that the UK professional community can meet the specific needs of these new businesses and that business start-ups have access to the information and advice they need. Venturefest will bring these groups together, allowing them to share knowledge and - we hope - do business."
