AS a local volunteer for the Royal United Kingdom Beneficent Association (Rukba), I wish to inform readers about the important work done in the York community, and to encourage people to find out more about us.

Rukba is a national charity which champions independence for older people and for the third year running we are celebrating Rukba Week until October 12.

Rukba offers practical help to older people who are struggling to make ends meet, to enable them to keep living independent lives. Our help includes a small, regular extra income for life, grants for repairs and special equipment and the friendship and support of volunteer visitors.

Most of our beneficiaries have never needed help before so all assistance is given with the utmost discretion and sensitivity.

If you would like more information on how Rukba can help someone you know, or are interested in volunteering, please call Patsy Till on 01430 422307 for a confidential chat.

We also offer a free advice guide, 60-Wise, which contains useful guidance on matters affecting older people. This can be obtained by telephoning 08457 585680.

Gillian Geekie,

Hon Secretary,
