LAKESIDE School won the Parent Teachers' Association five-a-side football trophy after a nerve-wracking tournament.

They needed extra time to defeat Woodthorpe 2-1 in the final after beating Bishopthorpe 5-4 on penalties in the semi-finals.

Earlier Lakeside stormed through the group stages, without conceding a goal to top Group 'C' ahead of Dunnington. Woodthorpe, who won Group 'A', booked their place in the final by beating Group 'B' winners Park Grove 2-1 in the semi-finals.

York Schools' Under-14s kicked off their season with a confidence-boosting 3-0 win over Spen Valley at York RI's New Lane ground.

Danny Penrose fired York ahead after 15 minutes after the Spen 'keeper parried his first shot. James Windhill made it 2-0 fed by Jamie Williamson.

York's defence weathered several attacks after half-time and Dan Smith made several crucial saves.

York regained their composure and after a couple of near misses, Penrose completed the scoring when he robbed a defender and dribbled round the 'keeper.

York City Schools' U12s also started the campaign with a 3-0 home win against Nottingham.

Joe Dale scored the opener with the second coming from Mike Byram towards half-time. Midway through the second half, Adam McMahon squeezed in a shot from an acute angle for the third goal.

Captain Ryan Qualter marshalled York's defence with a solid performance along with Ryan O'Reilly. Ben Johnson worked tirelessly in midfield with Joe Breedon.

CROSS-COUNTRY

The first round of the English Schools' Cross-Country Cup at Whitby saw some excellent individual and team performances by York-area schools to qualify for next month's regional finals.

Performance of the day was Tadcaster's David Brown, a footballer who does no specific athletics training. He defeated the Northallerton athlete who won English Schools' 800metres bronze and was previously third in the National Inter-Counties.

Emma Macalister-Hall (St Peters), the English Schools' silver medallist at 800m, who has been unable to train much because of injury, still defeated the Yorkshire Cross-Country champion to win the Intermediate girls' race.

Team packing enabled Queen Margaret's School, Escrick, to qualify for the next round in both girls' age groups. Tadcaster's junior girls and intermediate boys, plus St Peters' intermediate girls also qualified.
