Of course Unkle is not a band in a proper sense, but a collection of people who have gravitated to the same clever, clever corner at London/Brighton music scene parties.
James Lavelle is the thread that binds. He linked record visionary DJ Shadow with sundry musicians and singers for the under-rated debut Psyence Fiction.
Four years later the Mo' Wax label mainstay is back with best friend, singer and mixer Richard File with a carefully-crafted 63 minutes of thoughtful beats. It's an ambitious collaboration bringing together big names (Ian Brown, Jarvis Cocker, Brian Eno) with big themes. But where's the edge? Eye For An Eye, first played during an anti-war short programme on September 11, 2002, gets closest with moody vocals and galloping bass guitar. There's plenty of atmosphere at this party, but it's like everyone is standing around waiting for someone else to do something memorable. Sadly they don't.
