MONTHS ago my wife was given an appointment at York Hospital for Tuesday, December 23, 2003. She was asked to let the patient administration officer know as soon as possible if she was unable to attend.

She immediately rang the given number, only to be told the number was busy, so she wrote to the given address to say that the date was inconvenient. No answer was received.

Today she received a further letter saying that her appointment had been changed to 9am on Tuesday, December 23, 2003.

Again she was asked to ring as soon as possible if she was unable to attend. She did so immediately and was told the number was busy, but to dial five for ring back. She dialled five and was told that five could not be used.

She then rang York Hospital switchboard, but the operator found it impossible to contact the patient administration officer.

It seems futile to write another letter to a person who appears to be incommunicado.

What is the answer to this problem?
