THE Black Swan Folk Club in York will complement its weekly meetings at the Black Swan Inn with an autumn of concerts at the National Centre for Early Music.

June Tabor opened the NCEM folk season last Wednesday. Next up will be Simon Mayor and Hilary James with their Hoagy, Hornpipes, Handel and Hoedown show, a night of folk, blues, swing and classical music on October 25.

Coope, Boyes & Simpson are joined on November 25 by fellow a cappella singers Jo Freya, Fi Fraser and Georgina Boyes for Harvest Home, an autumnal celebration of traditional songs and narratives.

At Christmas, harmony trio Artisan perform their festive show, Stuff The Turkey, on December 22.

Back at the Black Swan, in Peasholme Green, the Thursday night programme continues next week with Australian singer-songwriter Bernard Carney, who writes both serious songs and satires.

On October 23, expatriate Geordie Tim Readman returns from Canada to link up with York fiddle player, singer and guitarist Kate Bramley.

Guitarist Duncan McFarlane travels a far shorter distance - from Leeds - on October 30 to play alongside fiddler Anne Brivonese.

Kathryn Roberts and Sean Lakeman, once of new-folk darlings Equation, visit the Black Swan on November 13; the Great Northern Roadshow on November 20 brings together three North Eastern musicians, Northumbrian piper Pauline Cato, fiddler Tom McConville and guitarist Terry Docherty; and the focus turns from folk to blues, rags and American hillbilly music in the hands of veteran guitar picker Eddie Walker on December 4.

Christmas comes a fortnight early with Nancy Kerr and James Fagan's festive celebrations on December 11.

All acoustic performers are welcome at the open-house Singers & Musicians Nights on October 9, November 6 and November 27. Admission to these informal sessions is £2, concessions £1.50, free for performers,

Prices for Black Swan guest nights range from £5 to £7 on the door; £1 off for concessions.
