I was interested to read Mr D Harkus's letter in the Evening Press (Saturday, October 4) suggesting that York City Knights did not deserve to win the National League club of the year award.

He is entitled to his views but I would suggest they are based on confusion about the award.

I understand the criteria includes elements such as media links, an area where the Knights have been outstanding.

Another criteria is the match day experience which is another tick in the box as the organisation, entertainment, and friendliness of staff is better than anywhere else in Rugby League - and I speak as someone who attended most away matches and several Super League games.

Thirdly, any club who finishes fourth in its first year deserves all the credit possible.

Mr Harkus appears to think winning leagues and trophies is the only criteria for success. On that basis I assume he thinks St Helens, Leeds, Hull are all abject failures. That could not be further from the truth.

A vibrant, friendly club with a focus on its community links, youth development and with a positive eye to the future is what we need - and that is what we have in York City Knights.

Maybe it is time Mr Harkus expanded his horizons and got fully on board with the vision that will eventually result in Super League status. But, in the meantime, he can engage with the fantastic success story that is York City Knights.

IN reply to Mr D Harkus's letter, I must point out that the team, club and personnel at York City Knights deserve all the accolades that have come their way this season.

For a 'new' club to go as far as they did is a result of a lot of hard work, guts and determination both on and off the pitch.

We now have a club that is second to maybe only Super League clubs for its matchday experience.

The fans have been absolutely fantastic this season. I have loved being at every game both home and away. They also have done their part in making the Knights the club of the year.

The players, coach and backroom staff have given their all this season. They have put their bodies on the line, as the large injury list tells us, for the club and the supporters including Mr Harkus.

Okay, they lost to Gateshead and drew with London, I remember being at Wembley when Wigan lost to Sheffield! Was that supposed to happen? I don't think so, but these things do.

We came back from those games and played some outstanding rugby - and that from an outfit which has only played together as a team for one season.

I am proud to say well done to my home team the York City Knights, the Club of the Year.
