I DO not think traffic lights at the Monkgate roundabout is a good idea. Frequently as I travel around York, I see countless cyclists defying death by ignoring red traffic lights.

These would be yet another set to be ignored and a waste of the taxpayers' money. We need the police to mount a vigorous campaign to crack down on the cyclists flouting traffic lights.

Before the anti-motorist lobby attacks me I should add that I also ride a bicycle, but in a sensible manner.

...WE cycle round the Monkgate roundabout every day to and from work and strongly support the efforts of Councillors Brian Watson and Viv Kind to make this roundabout safer for cyclists and pedestrians (October 10).

Sainsbury's is planning the redevelopment of its store at Foss Bank which we understand will include building a new supermarket and changes to the access routes to the site.

There is a great opportunity to link the improvements to cyclist and pedestrian safety on the Monkgate roundabout to better and safer routes from this area to the northern entrance to the Sainsbury's site.
