THREE-QUARTERS of local people believe there are junctions and roads in the Vale of York that need to be looked at urgently, a new survey has revealed.

The figures showed that 75 per cent of people who responded were concerned about certain stretches of road in the county, such as the York Outer Ring Road and Whixley crossroads.

The figures came as part of a survey of constituents conducted by Vale of York MP, Anne McIntosh. A total of 147 people responded to the survey, which asked eight questions looking at road, rail and traffic issues in the region.

Fifty-four per cent of people who were asked whether they were pleased with public transport in the area said they were not, while 69 per cent of people were against motorway or town centre congestion charging, 72 per cent of respondents said they were happy with Park&Ride.

People also expressed their support for a bypass scheme on the A19 at Shipton-by-Beningbrough, with 44 per cent favouring this and other bypass schemes.

Nearly everyone who filled in the survey said that more attention needed to be paid to the issues of rail, traffic and roads in the Vale of York. Miss McIntosh, the Shadow Transport Minister, said it showed that the Government needed to work harder to tackle existing transport problems.

She said: "A majority of my constituents share my view that the Government should be doing far more to tackle the issues of rail, roads and congestion in North Yorkshire.

"Along with my Conservative colleagues at Westminster and on local and county councils, I will strive to ensure that the local transport issues are addressed at a local, national and regional level, not just in the Vale of York, but across the country."
