MICHAEL Lynch is to exhibit original paintings and digital photographs at the King's Manor, Exhibition Square, York.

Lynch is an award-winning designer and former editorial artist at the Evening Press. He studied graphic design at the York School of Art and went on to work for several leading design studios in London.

His paintings have been exhibited at the Royal Academy, York Art Gallery, Leeds City Art Gallery, the Walker Gallery and Leighton House, among others. He lives and freelances in York.

"Most of my paintings have been based on the photographs I've always taken," he says. "One reason for working this way is that my complex painting techniques would be impossible to do on location - some paintings take months to complete.

"Another reason is that I always wanted to push the image further, to emphasise or change certain elements in ways that photography alone would not allow."

Technology permits new possibilities, he says. "With the advent of digital photography, I'm now able to use computer software to help create my images, and put the brushes and paints aside."

In his King's Manor show, both methods of working are on view in the selection of paintings and photographic work. Exhibition dates are November 10 to December 20; opening hours are Monday to Friday, 10am to 4pm.
