ACCORDING to John Prescott on Radio 4's Today programme, the cost of the regional assemblies the Government proposes will be about £25 million.

To the Government that pumped £400 million into the Scottish Parliament and millions into the Millennium Dome this looks like peanuts. To ordinary mortals it is money that could be better spent elsewhere.

Is there any chance that the Government could divert its attention from banning fox hunting and creating unnecessary new tiers of administration to the policies on which it was elected - or has it completely lost touch with the people who elected it?
