FOOLISH firebugs who torched piles of rubbish across York early today have been accused of endangering lives.

Firefighters forced entry to a smoke-filled pizza shop in Glencoe Street, near Burton Stone Lane, after a wheelie bin blaze spread to the back door at 3.15am.

Over the next three hours officers attended a wheelie bin fire in Shipton Street, a skip blaze in Navigation Road and a wheelie bin fire in Walmgate. Rubbish in a porch off Walmgate was also set on fire.

A spokesman for North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue said each fire was started deliberately, but the incidents may not all have been linked.

He said no properties were seriously damaged but firefighters could be diverted from more serious incidents where lives could be at risk.

Sub-officer Dave Ashman said condemned those responsible. "They have endangered lives," he said. "It's extremely foolish."

He thought that kids, who had just broken up from school for the Easter holidays, might have been responsible.
