A FUTURISTIC £2.5m centre for research into the science of sound opened at York University today.

The Sir Jack Lyons Music Research Centre includes a surround sound auditorium, which is the only one of its kind in England.

The 150-seater concert hall, called the Sykes Rymer Auditorium, will house an Italian-made grand piano.

The centre will be used for performances as well as research into music by post-graduate students.

Director of music at the research centre, Dr Tony Myatt, said: "The centre builds on the extraordinary successes the department of music has seen over the last 40 years, and equips the university for its role in the international research communities of the future in fields of research which have become signatures. It will also be a wonderful asset for the region."

The controller of Radio Three, Roger Wright, opened the centre today.
