THE Labour Party is today at least three members lighter after three York stalwarts burned their membership cards in response to war in Iraq.

Gordon Campbell-Thomas and Mick and Sue Hoban said they could not support UK military action without UN backing.

Mr Campbell-Thomas said: "This hurts but I cannot allow my name to be used for this unjust, politically motivated act. I have done everything this party ever asked of me but feel I was left with no choice, and will now actively campaign against Labour at the coming local elections."

Mr and Mrs Hoban said: "This is a big wrench but we cannot support a party that flouts the UN. We cannot support this illegal act."

David Ellis, chairman of York Labour Party, has previously said he was not surprised party members had different views on Iraq, and that they were entitled to express those views.
