RESIDENTS and businesses in the centre of Stamford Bridge have launched a campaign group to press for flood defences to be built as quickly as possible.
The formation of the Stamford Bridge Square Flood Defence Association follows East Riding of Yorkshire Council's deferral last week of the Environment Agency's £1 million scheme to protect the village.
The council wants the agency to re-consider the installation of moveable flood walls around the Shallows in the centre of the village, because of concerns about the visual impact of permanent flood banks.
It also wants to discuss the exclusion from the scheme of the Cornmill Restaurant and also of two properties on the opposite bank of the River Derwent.
The association, whose members were flooded in both 1999 and 2000, said in a statement that it deplored the council's decision not to grant planning permission and thereby delay the scheme.
Association members attended last night's Stamford Bridge parish council meeting to express their concern and dismay about the delays.
They also plan to hold a meeting with the agency and the MP for Stamford Bridge, Greg Knight.
