ORGANISERS of "Bitesize", the quick learning programme in North Yorkshire, are chewing over the fact it has been a huge success.

Latest figures show that the programme, organised and funded by the Learning and Skills Council (LSC) North Yorkshire, benefited 1,500 learners, who attended nearly 600 free Bitesize courses called Intros, since the beginning of this year .

The scheme, often operated in the workplace, is a way of reintroducing learning to people who have drifted away from formal education, some of whom wrongly believe that they are "unteachable".

At the end of their hour-long course, learners receive a certificate and guidance on how to further their skills.

More than 20 training organisations from across North Yorkshire are being funded to put on Bite Size Intros at employers' premises.

Now, with just a month to go before the end of the scheme, and with Learning At Work Day looming on May 20, the LSC wants more people with individual skills to offer their paid services as Bitesize tutors for a last minute acceleration of success.

Simon Kendrew, marketing adviser for the LSC North Yorkshire, said: "The range of subjects has been hugely varied, ranging from lessons in how to order a meal in Spanish to aromatherapy to digital photography and computer skills.

"The process works. Our own research shows that nearly 80 per cent of all learners who attended Bitesize Intros went on either to inquire about furthering their education or actually registered for other courses."

Skilled tutors, who would arrange a venue, get marketing back-up from the LSC North Yorkshire.

Kevin Marrow, of LSC North Yorkshire, said: "If you can produce around ten adults to go on a Bite Size at your workplace, we can be there. The more people you have, the more we can put on for you.

"You could even link up with suppliers or other businesses in your area."

Other one-hour topics have included stress management, first aid, sports techniques and brushing up on spelling.
