Like the waves in the album title, this second release from South ebbs and flows.
Jumping ship from Mo'Wax to Sanctuary, the band has, sadly, ditched much of the layers, loops and samples associated with former label boss James Lavelle for a more streamlined affair. There are still some epic tunes.
Opening tracks Motiveless Crime and Colours In Waves have a timeless majesty about them, awash with a swell of soaring instrumentation and allowing Joel Cadbury's voice to shine. Silver Sun is similarly grand. The warm simplicity of the stripped-down What I Find and Radiohead pastiche Threadbare ably bring up the rear end, but the middle is lacking the sophisticated detailing that coloured From Here On In. If they wanted to create a record to put on in the background, South have certainly succeeded. Listenable but not memorable.
