MRS Liney asks why Park & Ride buses from Monks Cross and the proposed Poppleton site will not serve Clifton Moor (Letters, May 14).

In fact, service 20 runs between Monks Cross and Clifton Moor. Information on journey times are available from the BusInfo Office on 01904 551400.

Mrs Liney asks why a slip road hasn't been built from the A64 to the racecourse. Such a link is likely to have little effect on traffic levels.

A slip road could be constructed to direct motorists off the A64 and on to the racecourse, but at a substantial cost.

Such a slip road could, however, only deal with traffic heading towards Scarborough and does nothing to help people leaving the racecourse.

As only around half of race traffic uses the A64 and, of that, only about 70 per cent uses the Scarborough-bound carriageway, the real effect on congestion caused by race traffic would be minimal.

To provide a junction that would allow traffic arriving on the A64 to enter from any direction and leave to any direction would cost many millions. Even if that money could be found, the necessary legal and planning processes would take years.

Both City of York Council and the police are committed to improving how race traffic is managed, both for Ascot and in the future, substantially redirecting race traffic away from city centre streets.

The developing traffic management plan for Ascot recognises the need to focus all race traffic to the A64 and use the existing A64 junctions to provide the connection to the national highway system.
