IT WAS like nothing Fibbers had seen before.

A flashing neon sign, 1980s eyeliner, oodles of rock posturing and a guy in a mohair jumper twiddling his "machine".

And that was only in the first 20 seconds.

In spite of the disappointingly poor Sunday night audience, "glam scum punks" Pink Grease made their York debut with an exhilarating mix of Rocky Horror meets Spinal Tap, plus the added bonus of some pretty fine tunes to boot.

Ripping through the crowd's initial apathy with a frenzied rendition of Remember Forever, complete with its Adam Ant-esque war cry, the Sheffield six-piece were clearly on a mission to entertain with their Roxy Music-meets-Electric-Six hybrid.

Melding disco, electro, glam and punk with a dash of good old rock'n'roll, Pink Grease are at once ridiculously appealing and faintly ridiculous. A stomping rendition of Fever saw gyrating frontman Rory Lewarne clambering precariously on the crowd barrier, which he later leapt from for a bit of a roll around on the floor beneath the punters. Sax-heavy The Pink G.R.Ease also had Rory dancing among the audience, while repeated requests for the infectious Shake were eventually rewarded - performed with the proviso that the crowd did just that.

These guys might be mad as hatters but they're not afraid to put on a good show, even if it's just for 100 people. With a debut album out next month, Pink Grease are definitely ones to watch.
