UNIVERSITY chiefs in York have been given £2.4 million to help them improve their links with the business world.
The Higher Education Innovation Fund has awarded the cash to the University of York to create a new innovation and enterprise unit, to reach out into the business community and exploit the university's research strengths in key areas.
At its core will be a team of business development managers, each focusing on a sector of industry that has a connection with the university's research strengths.
These will cover health and medicine, creative media, arts and heritage, life sciences, IT and communications, chemistry, sciences and engineering.
The Government scheme has awarded a total of £185 million to support "knowledge transfer" from universities to business and the wider community, as part of its drive to boost the UK's innovation performance and productivity.
The award will last from August 2004 to August 2006. The business development managers will also co-ordinate and market the university's continuing professional development programmes and develop its established student enterprise training programmes.
