SUMMER, the season for music festivals and other outdoor events, has arrived. However, before leaving for weekends of entertainment make sure you are well equipped and know your rights in case things go wrong.

If you're travelling to an organised event by coach, make sure the operator knows your latest arrival time. If the business is unaware, this will affect any compensation you can claim if they fail to get you there in time. Get written confirmation of collection/drop off points and times. If things go wrong you'll need to prove these were part of the original agreement.

If you are camping and splashing out on a new tent the law says that it must be of satisfactory quality and fit for its purpose. It should not be faulty and should be durable enough to withstand normal use for a reasonable time. If not, you are entitled to a refund if you act quickly.

Check the tent is in good working order within a few days of the purchase date. Remember to keep your receipt.

If you are going up-market and staying in a B&B or hotel, you are entitled to a reasonable standard of accommodation having regard to the price you pay. All accommodation and facilities should be as described, exist and be in working order. If not, you may claim redress for breach of contract. In addition, Trading Standards can investigate false or misleading statements.

Tickets for festivals and concerts can be expensive and prices may vary between agents. If you buy a ticket as part of a package, you should be told the face value of the ticket. Most ticket agents add a booking fee to ticket prices, but as long as you are not misled by these there is no limit to them. It is best to shop around to obtain tickets at the best possible price.

Often the price of food and drink at festivals is much higher than you might expect. Again, provided that you are charged according to the price-list, this is not against the law.

City of York Council Trading Standards offer the following advice:

Make sure all contractual details are in writing and keep original documents

Photocopy any letters you send to traders and send them recorded delivery

Shop around for tickets to make sure that you get the best deal
