TEENAGERS could get cheaper bus fares under proposals to improve life for young people in York.

A city council group has worked for a year with young people and others to tackle issues facing the city's youth. It warns that many young people feel threatened by crime, particularly by gangs, and want more facilities, including an ice rink.

In its draft report, the Young People in York Scrutiny Panel makes 11 recommendations, including giving YoCards to all people under 19 in full-time education. Currently, the cards only allow under-16s to get reduced fares for leisure travel.

The group also calls for city councillors to attend school lessons every six to 12 months so they can speak directly to young people about the council and get their views. Another recommendation calls for York to have a Young Person's Champion who would improve contact between children, teenagers and decision-makers.

The group's survey of schoolchildren revealed that many would like the city to have an ice rink. The winter sports arena comes third behind other sports facilities, and youth clubs, but ahead of a music venue and improved parks.

The panel's report says: "Efforts must be ongoing to engage young people in the life of the city and in discussions about its development."

Many young people told the panel they condemned crime. Several had themselves been victims of crime.

The panel will meet at The Guildhall on Wednesday to discuss its report.
