Alex Lloyd looks at a more mordern spin on karaoke.

KARAOKE - it's just so dated.

All that singing along to dodgy backing tapes and squinting to read the words to Blondie has been done to death.

For those who think they can belt out a tune - or at least like to give it a shot - the place to be for a "moment in the spotlight" fix these days is Kennedy's.

The Little Stonegate caf-bar has come up with a slightly more sophisticated twist on the karaoke/open mic formula called Take The Mike, due to take place this Sunday night.

Hosted by Chris Johnson, aka Little Chris, it has been running on the last Sunday of the month since November and is proving to be a hit with the talented and talentless alike.

Manager Ange Goliger says: "We tried a few open mic nights but they can be really intimidating and we wanted something a bit more fun. This is like a mix between open mic and karaoke. You don't have to be massively talented to have a go."

Musicians and performers are welcome to come along with their instruments and take part, and there are guitars available for people to borrow.

Alternatively, anyone who fancies getting up and singing, however good or bad, can get Chris to accompany them for a moment in the spotlight.

"The best nights have been when people just get up and have a go with Chris playing for them," says Ange. It is mainly a young audience and they are really supportive. Everyone just has a laugh and it is really laid back."

Entry is free and anyone who wants to perform just has to turn up on the night.

There's also a drinks offer on wine - buy two glasses and get the rest of the bottle free. Perfect for those budding superstars in need of a little Dutch courage.

Take The Mike, Sunday, 9.30pm-midnight, Kennedy's Caf Bar, Little Stonegate, 01904 620222.
