THE family of a young father who killed himself over fears of separating from his partner have paid tribute to a loving son and brother.

An inquest heard that Jonathan Ward, 27, was found hanged at his home in Hempbridge Road, Selby, by his partner, Melissa Osborne, on May 4 this year.

He was said to have become very upset over fears that the couple, who had a young son, might separate.

Jonathan also had a former wife, who lives in Spain, and two other children, Nathan, eight, and Lauren, seven. His mother, Ann Newton, 63, of Montague Street, York, said her son had a "cheeky grin" which could have broken many hearts.

She said Jonathan attended Knavesmire Primary School and Millthorpe Secondary School, in York, and had a strong artistic talent.

But despite going on to study art and design at York College, he did not pursue his gift but went on to try out a number of different jobs.

"He could turn his hand to anything," said Mrs Newton. Jonathan's sister, Helen Ward, 25, of South Bank, York, said: "He was really cheeky.

"He had this big grin that you couldn't resist."

Jonathan met his first wife, Mary, while living in London with his older sister, Wenda.

In 1996, the couple married at London's Bushy House, travelling to the church in a horse and carriage.

They moved to Spain, but the relationship fell apart, and Jonathan returned to Britain in 1998.

His career took a new direction and he became a chef, working in bars and restaurants throughout York, including the Buzz Bar.

"He was happiest when he was in the kitchen," said Mrs Newton.

An address written by Mrs Newton was read out at Jonathan's packed funeral at York Crematorium on May 14.

In it she said: "My final words are those used regularly by Jonathan: "Night night. Sweet dreams. Love you - see you later.

"If only he had realised how many people did love him, we may not be here today."
