A PROPERTY developer's bid to build a block of 12 flats on a York working men's club is expected to be given the go-ahead.
John Guildford, of Guildford Construction, wants to demolish the Promenade Working Men's Club in St Benedict Road and replace it with a three-storey apartment building.
City of York councillors are being recommended to approve the application at their September 1 meeting, despite a petition with 55 signatures, objecting to the loss of the club.
A report to the council says the original application featured ten flats and a new club. But a request by the WMC for a flat to be provided for its steward was considered unviable, leading to the club's closure.
The Evening Press conducted a major survey of York's social clubs in 2002 in the wake of four closing in just over a year.
It revealed that a lack of younger members and decreasing profit margins were threatening clubs, in the face of interest from developers.
