PLANS are being finalised for the 50th anniversary celebrations of the York Guild of Building.

A special yearbook to mark the occasion is being assembled, with contributions from some of the branch's 130 members.

Details for a celebratory lunch at York's Mansion House on Wednesday, October 27, are being worked out, along with money-raising activities for Macmillan Nurses Appeal, the Guild's chosen charity.

Ted Howland, Master of the York Guild, praised the leadership and vision of the late Peter Shepherd, who was later knighted for his services to the building industry, for starting the branch at an inaugural meeting in St William's College, in 1954.

It flourished as the building industry pulled together to reduce costs and increase efficiency in a post-war Britain. Membership levels fell back after the first ten years, but began to revive 25 years ago.
