THERE are no traffic lights at the gas main works on the A19 at Fulford.

The council does not wish to obstruct the flow of traffic because there are already some on another major routes into York. So the the works are set away from the pavement.

Pedestrians have to walk on the road, workers have no gap between them and the passing vehicles.

Traffic out of York has to cross the white line to avoid a small plastic fence around the 4ft deep hole at the side. So inward traffic meets oncoming traffic in the middle of the road. Lorries cannot pass through with any other vehicle, and the stretch of works is getting longer.

If the planned junction for Germany Beck is correct, the council intends to put in a new set of traffic lights with a junction very near this spot.

They are contradicting themselves by saying the extra 1,000-plus cars and this new junction would not slow the flow of traffic and cause congestion, yet temporary traffic lights to avoid a nasty accident, or a pedestrian being run over, would.

Do they not want to draw attention to the amount of congestion this new junction really would cause?
