THE EVENING PRESS rolled off the printing press in its new compact guise for the first time today after student Fiona Baxter launched the newspaper into a new era.

The 27-year-old was the lucky reader to who won our competition to set the presses in motion for the all-new tabloid, with editor Kevin Booth at a ceremony earlier today.

Speaking in the control room at the Evening Press's Walmgate offices, Fiona, of Garths End, Fulford, York, said: "All the machinery looks very technical but I just had to press the green button. I always read the paper so it is great to see how it is all produced."

Evening Press editor Kevin Booth said: "I believe today's switch to a compact format is the most significant single development in the 122-year history of the Evening Press. It's what our readers have continually asked for and, as such, I think it is extremely fitting that we had Fiona here today to help us mark the occasion. I very much hope that people enjoy the new look."
