A SAFETY shake-up is on the cards for the Skeldergate-North Street-Micklegate-Bridge Street junction because of accidents in the last three years (Evening Press, August 25).

I hope consideration will also be given to the other two junctions along Micklegate.

Because of tailbacks from traffic turning from Nessgate to Low Ousegate due to nearby bus stops, crossing Low Ousegate from the Spurriergate corner one often encounters moving traffic, even on a green man signal.

At the best of times it is a corner where cyclists ignore the red stop signal and weave among pedestrians crossing from all corners.

Recently, I was crossing from High Ousegate to Low Ousegate and the green man signal began to flash when I was three-quarters of the way across. The first car waiting to turn left into Low Ousegate sped off on the flashing amber light/green man signal although the crossing was not clear of pedestrians.

In another incident I was waiting, along with several other people, to cross George Hudson Street at the Micklegate junction. When the green man came on three cars turned right from Bridge Street in follow-my-leader style. I pointed to the green man but my signal was ignored.

For pedestrians with walking difficulties, drivers who go through a red stop signal cut short the crossing time - worse still they could cut short someone's life.

Perhaps a drop-down barrier such as those in car parks may be more effective at traffic signals.
