York City manager Chris Brass wants to set up a training day with rugby league club York City Knights.

Brass believes his players could benefit from witnessing the rugby league club's coaching methods first hand and also feels that a trip to Wigginton Road could be equally as educational for their cross-city sporting neighbours.

Knights coach Richard Agar has welcomed the idea believing both clubs could learn things off each other.

The possibility of invitations to each other's training sessions has been discussed in the past and Brass is now hoping to fix up dates appropriate to both clubs.

He said: "We have previously touched on doing something training wise with the Knights and it's something I would like to pursue. I think it would be beneficial for both clubs to study each others' sessions.

"It would be a fun day and would give both sets of players an insight into what training and coaching methods other sports people use.

"I know the rugby boys take things seriously. Gone are the days when you would celebrate a victory by going straight to the bar and having 20 pints.

"They are extremely fit. You always see them in the gym and they are very knowledgeable about looking after themselves. Their mental approach is probably better than footballers at our level.

"I don't think we'd challenge them to a rugby match though because I think they would absolutely batter us.

"I just think it is interesting to study the coaching methods of people in all sports."

Agar agreed. "They're more than welcome to sit down and swap ideas. It would be something I would be warm to," he said.

"I think it's always interesting to have a look at other sports and see if you can adapt things to your own sport.

"The respective strengths of the players are different - the facets of the games are different in terms of the way the players need to be conditioned - but with certain things like speed and footwork drills and communication there could be cross-over areas where we could bounce one or two things of each other."
