At last Alison Moyet delivers the album her fans deserve.
She is one of the great British vocal talents; unfortunately, she just hasn't got the same talent as a writer and her solo albums have disappointed. Voice, however, is the glorious kind of record Dusty Springfield produced in her heyday.
Indeed, Moyet covers Windmills Of Your Mind, What Are You Doing The Rest Of Your Life and Cry Me A River, directly from Springfield's back catalogue.
However, Elvis Costello's Almost Blue and God Give Me Strength give this covers' album a contemporary edge. The highlight is the brace of chansons, sung in French, as only the best torch songs can be, and Henry Purcell's Dido's Lament: When I Am Laid In Earth.
Complemented by Anne Dudley's understated, yet lush arrangements, Moyet's voice lends itself to the most miserable of ballads with her aching melancholy. So sad, so beautiful.
