What do you get if the cross the offspring of the Beach Boys and the Mamas And The Papas?
The Beachbabes may have been a better name, but Carnie and Wendy Wilson (daughters of Beach Boy Brian) and Chynna Phillips (daughter of John and Michelle from the M&Ps) obviously thought otherwise.
The aim here is to capture the spirit of California, so they have turned to the great and the good from their folks' generation rather than anything contemporary in this collection of covers.
The trio's trademark harmonies give the fine selection a consistency, but the arrangements rarely stray from the originals, most notably in Joni Mitchell's California. The few surprises include an acoustic version of The Eagles' Already Gone, the recasting of Fleetwood Mac's Go Your Own Way as a ballad and a rendition of Mamas and The Papas Monday Monday as if by Blondie.
