THE Salvation Army is the largest provider of social welfare in Britain after the Government and at this time of year we are preparing for our annual appeal, which raises millions of pounds to support that role.

In 2003 the people of York helped The Salvation Army raise about £11,000 which went towards a national total of £2.7 million. We are always impressed by the public's generosity and hope to top that figure this year.

During our annual appeal fortnight, September 18 to October 3, volunteers will be conducting house-to-house collections in the York area. During that time please check the press for details of associated fundraising events which may also be taking place.

We should love to hear from anyone who would like to join our collection teams - please contact Jaelithe Brewer on 0113 281 0108.

The Salvation Army's Appeal theme for 2004 is Belief In Action. The Salvation Army believes no one is beyond hope and, with the right help and support, anyone can overcome their problems.

Our Christian ethos inspires everything we do. For every £1 donated to the annual appeal, 92p goes towards our social work, which includes supporting the homeless, the elderly, young people, the disadvantaged and the unloved.

Thanks for your support.
