YOUR article "Burial space fear in York" (September 6) states that York Cemetery "will be full in ten years".

Perhaps we should point out that when the cemetery went into voluntary liquidation in 1966 the reason for its closure was stated to be that the cemetery had no more space!

That was almost 40 years ago and the cemetery has been burying regularly ever since.

We are currently carrying out a very detailed survey of all our burial land in the cemetery and it now appears that there will be space for interments for many decades to come.

Further, during the last few years, we have experienced a trend towards interment of cremated remains and away from full burials, which relieves further the pressure on the burial land we have here.

York Cemetery is available for interments now and we expect it to be for the indefinite future.
