THE battle to save Terry's was today being taken to a union's national conference in Scarborough.
Delegates were being urged to support the GMB's bid to keep production of top chocolates such as All Gold and Chocolate Orange in the York area.
Two shop stewards from the threatened York factory, Vic Botterill and Tina Robinson, went to Scarborough's Grand Hotel to support an emergency motion, which was being put to the union's food and leisure section by members of another York sweet firm, Monkhill Confectionery.
The union accepts the need for the old factory in Bishopthorpe Road to close, but is pressing Terry's American owners, Kraft, to move production to a new purpose-built factory in the area, rather than transferring production abroad.
The union's stance is supported by the Evening Press Save Terry's petition, which has already been signed by more than 3,000 people.
