THEY will no longer be made in York if Terry's closes down next year - but York Fruits will continue to keep their traditional name.

Terry's American owners Kraft say the fruit flavour jellies' brand name is a trademark, and so they can continue being called York Fruits no matter where they are manufactured.

The company is not yet certain where they will be made, saying it could be a factory somewhere else in Britain, or on the Continent.

A spokeswoman said the Fruits, believed to have been launched in the 1970s, are the only non-chocolate product still made at the York factory, following the withdrawal in 1997 of Terry's Pastilles.

She could not say how many were sold each year, but said: "It's not a huge brand."

She said the sweets were only sold in Britain and Ireland and were more popular with older customers, with some regarding them as a traditional Christmas treat.
