FOR one former Terry's worker, the news the historic York factory was to shut hit especially hard.

Pensioner Beattie Rippon, 82, of Acomb, gave 36 years of her life to the factory, until she retired in 1978.

Her duties were to keep an eye on the chocolate covering being put on bars and sweets, a process known as "enrobing".

Beattie still visits the factory regularly to buy chocolate and meet former colleagues, some of whom still work there.

She said: "I was so upset when I found out, I had a cry. I will really miss Terry's. There is no need for them to close it and I wish they weren't. It has been a big part of my life."
