Yorkshire are expected to continue with their new left-handed opening batting combination of Australian Phil Jaques and Otley-born Joe Sayers in the final Championship match of the season against Glamorgan at Headingley on Thursday.

Sayers, 20, has made a great start to his Yorkshire career since graduating from Oxford University.

In four Championship matches, he has hit 250 runs and his temperament and technique have already marked him out as a potential England player.

Sayers was promoted to his natural role of opener against Somerset at Taunton last week and he and Jaques put on 162 together in the first innings of the rain-ruined match and 69 in the second.

Acting captain Matthew Wood had to move down the order to accommodate Sayers (pictured right) at the top but he batted fluently at number four and is now battling it out with Jaques to become the first Yorkshire batsman to complete 1,000 first-class runs this season.

Jaques has a narrow lead with 936 runs, but Wood is only 14 behind and the fans will be hoping that both can achieve the feat in what has been a generally disappointing season for the team.

Yorkshire from: Jaques, Sayers, Lumb, Wood, Pyrah, Dawood, Dawson, Bresnan, Hoggard, Kirby, Blain, Wainwright.
